TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Le Floridien) — Haitian-American State Representative Marie Woodson has been appointed to a major leadership position within the Florida Democratic Party, taking responsibility for strengthening the party’s relationship with Haitian-American voters and increasing their participation in upcoming elections.
Woodson was named the party’s vice chair for Haitian-American voter engagement during its Leadership Blue gathering. In the statewide role, she will lead efforts to engage, empower and mobilize Haitian-American Democrats across Florida.
The assignment focuses specifically on Haitian-American voters—not Florida’s entire Black or Caribbean electorate. However, its importance extends beyond one ethnic community because Haitian Americans represent a significant part of Florida’s broader Black and Caribbean population, particularly in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Greater participation among Haitian-American voters could become especially important for Democratic candidates competing in closely watched state and local elections.
“Representative Woodson has spent her career serving others with integrity, compassion, and purpose,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said in announcing the appointment. “Her leadership, deep roots in the Haitian American community, and unwavering commitment to public service and integrity make her exceptionally well suited to help lead this important work across Florida.”
Woodson said the position represents a continuation of the community advocacy she has pursued throughout her public-service career.
“I’m honored by this appointment and ready to get to work,” Woodson said. “This post is an extension of the work I have always done as an advocate and leader in my community. I’m confident that together we will be able to reach and mobilize the over 300,000 Haitian voters that call Florida home.”
Reaching Haitian Voters Across Florida
Woodson’s responsibility will likely require more than traditional political advertising. Effective engagement with Haitian-American voters often depends on trusted community organizations, churches, Haitian-owned businesses, local media and direct communication in both English and Haitian Creole.
She will be expected to help connect Democratic candidates and the party’s policy priorities with voters who may feel overlooked or insufficiently represented by the political establishment.
Issues such as immigration, affordable housing, healthcare, education, economic opportunity and support for working families remain particularly important in many Haitian-American communities.
Woodson brings decades of government and community-service experience to the assignment. In 2020, she made history as the first Haitian American from Broward County elected to the Florida Legislature. Woodson also recently secured reelection without opposition to represent Florida House District 105. Because no challenger qualified to run against her, she was automatically reelected and will not appear on the November ballot. The new two-year term will be her fourth and final consecutive term in the Florida House of Representatives under the state’s term-limit rules.
Before entering elected office, Woodson spent more than three decades working for Miami-Dade County government. During that period, she led divisions responsible for programs serving children, seniors and vulnerable families.
Her combination of legislative experience, administrative knowledge and strong community connections gives her an opportunity to bring Haitian-American concerns directly into the Florida Democratic Party’s voter-engagement strategy.
Continuing Nancy Metayer Bowen’s Legacy
Woodson’s appointment also carries considerable emotional and political significance because she follows the late Nancy Metayer Bowen, the Haitian-American Coral Springs vice mayor who played an influential role in mobilizing Caribbean and Haitian voters.
During the 2024 presidential election, Kamala Harris’ campaign appointed Metayer Bowen as its Florida Caribbean Vote Director. That position was broader than Woodson’s current assignment because it involved voter outreach across Florida’s diverse Caribbean-American communities.
Metayer Bowen later became the Florida Democratic Party’s vice chair for Haitian-American voter engagement—the position Woodson now holds. Her work helped establish a foundation for more consistent communication between the party and Florida’s Haitian community.
Metayer Bowen remained in that leadership role until her untimely death in April 2026. In announcing Woodson’s appointment, Democratic Party leaders emphasized that no one could replace Metayer Bowen but said the party remained committed to honoring her vision.
Woodson is therefore being asked not only to lead an electoral effort but also to preserve and expand the legacy of another Haitian-American woman who worked to give the community a stronger political voice.
A Major Test of Haitian-American Political Influence
Woodson’s appointment reflects a growing recognition that Haitian-American voters should not be approached only during the final weeks of an election. Building lasting political influence requires consistent communication, voter registration, civic education and serious attention to the community’s priorities.
Woodson’s success will be measured partly by her ability to transform the visibility of Haitian Americans into greater participation at the polls. Her responsibilities will include encouraging voter registration, promoting early voting, increasing turnout and making sure Haitian-American concerns receive attention within the party.
The assignment could also influence how political parties and candidates engage Haitian communities in future elections. A strong turnout effort would demonstrate that Haitian Americans constitute an organized political force capable of affecting races across South Florida and throughout the state.
By selecting Woodson for the position, the Florida Democratic Party has entrusted a Haitian-American elected official with connecting one of Florida’s most important immigrant communities to the political process.
The appointment honors the groundwork established by Nancy Metayer Bowen while raising Woodson’s profile as a statewide Democratic leader. More importantly, it gives Haitian-American voters another opportunity to demonstrate that their voices, votes and priorities can help shape Florida’s political future.
