Commissioner Yvette Colbourne Awards local Haitian American Leaders during Covid19

City of Miramar, FL — June 4, 2020 — On May 28 in recognition of Haitian Heritage Month, City of Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne presented Community Service Awards to Haitian American leaders, France-Martine Alcena, Magaly Prezeau, and Myrtho C. Valcin, respectively.  All ladies are residents of Miramar and are corner stones in the community.

France-Martine Alcena, is an educator, and a minister at St Bartholomew Catholic Church and the Regional Liaison of the Haitian Charismatic Renewal Movement of the Archdiocese of Miami.

Magaly Prezeau is a Community Leader, Advocate, Public Health Specialist and Champion for the Haitian-American communities in South Florida and Haiti for almost three decades. She is currently the CEO and Co-Founder of a Miramar-based non-profit organization, Community Access Center.

Since 2010, she has provided social services to the residents of Miramar and Broward, with a special emphasis on the challenges faced by the Haitian community.

Myrtho C. Valcin, created UFASEGA, in 1997, the first Haitian boys & girls scout club bringing together past and current members living in S. Florida. In 2004 she founded Macaya Foundation that raised awareness for health wellness and better education conditions for residents living in Jeremie, Haiti.

She currently has a leadership role in St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and an active member in Miramar’s Cultural Group and HANA (Haitian-American Nursing Association).

In the City of Miramar, the contribution of all communities are valuable to the collective learning, sharing and understanding of each other. We thank these leaders for their vision, dedication, and determination to create a voice. Due to Covid19, celebrations have been restricted to online participation. We look forward to celebrating the way that reflects the diversity of the Caribbean with great cuisine, music and festivity. Till then, stay safe.
