MIAMI, FL (Le Floridien) — The South Florida Haitian community is mourning the loss of two revered figures: Camille “Sove Je” Merilus, who died in August, and Georges Toussaint Daniel, who passed away in September. Their back-to-back departures have cast a somber pall over the community, prompting a collective reflection on their enduring legacies of service, and advocacy.
Camille “Sove Je” Merilus: A Voice for the Blind

Born on August 17, 1947, Camille Merilus—who passed away on August 22, 2025—devoted much of his life to raising awareness about the needs of the blind and visually impaired. Affectionately known as “Sove Je”—a nickname he embraced both from his blindness and the name of his organization—Merilus was relentless in urging people to protect their eyesight, care for their mental health, and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Despite losing his sight, Merilus was a familiar voice on Haitian radio, using every opportunity to educate and inspire. His advocacy made him a symbol of resilience and a source of strength for countless individuals facing similar challenges.
Mr. Merilus passed away at the age of 78. His funeral took place on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Haitian Evangelical Baptiste Church in North Miami, where many gathered to pay their respects. Those who attended remembered him not only as a man who overcame personal obstacles but also as someone who worked tirelessly to better the lives of others.
Georges Toussaint Daniel: A Lifetime of Community Involvement
The mourning deepened in September with the loss of another well-known figure, Georges Toussaint Daniel, who passed away on the morning of Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Born on March 4, 1936, Daniel was 89 years old.
Known for his active role in Haitian community affairs, Daniel’s efforts spanned decades. He was admired for his dedication, and willingness to support initiatives that promoted the well-being of his fellow Haitians. His passing was first shared by community activist and social worker Dr. Flore Lindor, who announced the news on Facebook—an act that quickly spread word of this significant loss.

Funeral services for Mr. Daniel will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Serenity Funeral Home & Cremation, 1450 S. State Road 7, North Lauderdale, FL 33068.
A Community in Reflection
The deaths of Camille Merilus and Georges Toussaint Daniel within weeks of one another have left a void in the South Florida Haitian community. Both men, in their own ways, embodied resilience, and service. Merilus through his unwavering advocacy for the blind, and Daniel through his steady involvement in community advancement.
With Camille “Sove Je” Merilus already laid to rest and Georges Toussaint Daniel set to be honored at funeral services next week, their lives stand as enduring reminders of the power of service and the duty to leave a legacy of compassion and commitment. For South Florida’s Haitian community, August and September 2025 will be remembered not only as months of profound loss, but also as a time of deep gratitude for two men who gave so much of themselves to the common good.
