How Florida’s Haitian-American Elected Officials Reacted to the Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump

Date:

MIAMI (Le Floridien) — The recent assassination attempt on the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump has sparked widespread reactions across the American political landscape and internationally. This grave incident transcends political affiliations and values, highlighting a moment of profound significance and concern.

Haitian-American elected officials in Florida, predominantly known as Democrats, have not remained indifferent to the recent senseless act. Many have swiftly condemned the attack, offering prayers for the Republican Party leader and expressing solidarity with all those affected by this act of violence.

Formerly known as Twitter, the platform X is a common venue for public figures and elected officials to share their thoughts and opinions. After consulting the Twitter accounts of all current Florida Haitian-American elected officials, here are the reactions we were able to compile regarding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump:

“Yesterday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in America. As Mayor of North Miami, I unequivocally condemn this act of violence. Political violence is unacceptable!” wrote North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme.

North Miami Beach Commissioner McKenzie Fleurimond, deeply troubled by the incident, was the first among them to react. He wrote just a couple of hours after the incident: “My thoughts are with former President Trump as well as the victims of the horrific attack that took place at the Pennsylvania rally. We must all uphold the mantle of political discourse without fear of violence. Our country needs prayer and unity at this time.”

“Political violence is NEVER the answer. The attempted assassination of Former Pres. Trump should rattle the core of every American. I pray for the family of the person who was murdered today, as well as the three people who were injured, including Former Pres. Trump,” wrote North Miami Vice-Mayor Mary-Estimé Irvin on her official account.

“I am deeply saddened by the recent shooting involving former President Donald Trump. My thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time. I pray for his swift and full recovery,” said Miami-Dade County District 2 Commissioner Marleine Bastien. She added, “Violence of any kind has no place in society. We can always agree to disagree. It is crucial that we come together as a nation, setting aside our differences to condemn such acts unequivocally. We must work towards creating a more peaceful and respectful dialogue among all Americans.”

As a Democrat, Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th Congressional District, also wrote: “An attempt on any political party threatens our democracy and must be condemned. Political violence has no place in our country. My thoughts and prayers are with former President Trump. I commend the Secret Service for their prompt and effective response.”

It is worth mentioning that, within twenty-four hours of the tragic event, several Haitian-American elected officials had not yet commented on the matter through their official Twitter accounts. These officials include State Representative Dotie Joseph (Miami-Dade District 108), State Representative Marie Paule Woodson (Broward County District 105), Coral Springs Commissioner Nancy Metayer Bowen, North Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Joseph, North Miami Councilman Frantz Charles, and North Miami City Clerk Vanessa Joseph.
