Little Haiti, Miami (Le Floridien) — As Haiti grapples with a deepening crisis since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Haitian communities in South Florida are determined to keep their cultural traditions alive, providing a sense of unity, joy, and resilience. One of the most vibrant expressions of Haitian culture, Kanaval, is set to take center stage in Little Haiti on Saturday, March 1, 2025, with the much-anticipated Little Haiti Kanaval Block Party – 3rd Edition.
A Celebration Rooted in Resilience
The block party, taking place at the Little Haiti Cultural Center from 6 PM to 11 PM, promises an electric atmosphere that embodies the essence of Kanaval. With performances by some of Haiti’s top bands and artists, including T-Vice, Shabba Ekip, Tonymix, Andybeatz, and Rara Lakay, attendees will enjoy live music, pulsating beats, and the vibrant energy synonymous with Haitian carnival.
Renowned hosts TonTon Bicha and Sefo will bring their signature charisma to guide the festivities. The lineup of DJs, such as DJ K9, DJ Bullet, and P Dous, promises nonstop entertainment, creating a true Kanaval vibe in the heart of Little Haiti.
The event comes at a time when Haiti continues to struggle with political instability, gang violence, and economic hardship. For the Haitian diaspora, especially in South Florida, preserving cultural traditions like Kanaval serves as a vital link to their roots and a symbol of hope.
“Kanaval is more than just music and dancing—it’s a reminder of who we are and where we come from,” says one of the organizers. “Even as Haiti faces challenges, we carry our culture with us, and we celebrate it with pride,” said Guy François Junior, better known as T-Guy, one of the event organizers.
A Family Affair
The Little Haiti Kanaval Block Party is designed to be a family-friendly event, welcoming people of all ages to join in the celebration. From traditional Rara bands to modern Haitian beats, the event showcases the rich tapestry of Haitian music and culture.
As attendees don their brightest carnival attire, wave flags, and dance in the streets, the event will echo the vibrancy of Kanaval in Haiti while adapting to the multicultural backdrop of South Florida.
The event is also a way of Keeping Tradition Alive in the Diaspora. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, Haiti’s annual Kanaval celebrations have been disrupted, leaving many Haitians abroad longing for a way to reconnect with their homeland’s traditions.
In response, events like this in South Florida have grown in significance, becoming cultural anchors for the diaspora. The Little Haiti Kanaval Block Party t’s not just a celebration; it’s a declaration that Haitian culture will endure, no matter the circumstances.
