(Tallahassee, FL) — In a legislative environment overwhelmingly controlled by Republicans, Haitian American Florida State Representative Marie Woodson has distinguished herself as one of the Democratic caucus’s most effective lawmakers. While minority-party legislators often struggle to advance their priorities in Tallahassee, Woodson achieved a significant milestone last Session: she passed more than half of the bills she sponsored, demonstrating an ability to build consensus and secure bipartisan support even amid deep political divides.
A Legislative Record That Defies the Odds
Woodson’s accomplishments underscore her disciplined approach to navigating a supermajority legislature. Her successful legislation delivered meaningful benefits across several key areas, including expanded coverage for supplemental breast exams, additional resources for young adults transitioning out of the state foster care system, protections against “notario fraud” that targets Spanish-speaking residents, and strengthened clean water infrastructure to support Florida’s long-term environmental and public health needs.
Passing even a small portion of sponsored bills is difficult for members of the minority party. Passing a majority signals strategic skill, sustained engagement, and an ability to work across the aisle.
Recognition for Leadership and Service
In September, the Broward Democratic Senior Caucus named Woodson its Legislator of the Year, citing her “outstanding dedication to democracy.” The award reflects not only her legislative accomplishments but also her growing responsibilities as House Democratic Whip for the 2024–2026 term.

The recognition took place during the Caucus’s fourth annual Awards Luncheon at the Jacaranda Country Club in Plantation. Woodson attributed her success to the many Floridians involved in the policymaking process, noting that her work centers on veterans, seniors, teachers, healthcare professionals, mental health advocates, and young people. She reiterated her commitment to the health, dignity, and well-being of all Floridians.
Grounded in Community, Driven by Purpose
Woodson’s effectiveness in Tallahassee is rooted in decades of civic involvement. Born in Haiti and a Florida resident since 1981, she has held several community leadership roles, including chair of the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women, membership in the Democratic Haitian American Caucus of Florida and the League of Women Voters of Broward County, and participation in the Hollywood Neighborhood Watch Advisory Board.
These experiences have shaped her legislative priorities and deepened her focus on equity, opportunity, and community well-being.
Positioned for Continued Service
Woodson is running unopposed for a fourth consecutive term representing House District 105. First elected in 2020, she remains eligible for additional terms under Florida’s term-limit rules, which allow state House members to serve four consecutive two-year terms. Her continued presence in Tallahassee provides consistency and experienced leadership for her district and for the Democratic caucus.
Her legislative track record has positioned her as one of the most impactful Democratic voices in Tallahassee, demonstrating that effectiveness is not solely determined by majority power, but by persistence, coalition-building, and a clear commitment to the constituents she serves.
