NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Le Floridien) — A disturbing case involving a North Miami Beach family is drawing attention across South Florida after police accused 29-year-old Nathalie Belizaire of leaving her four young children home alone while she went on a three-day cruise to the Bahamas.
Among the children allegedly left without adult supervision was a 2-month-old infant, according to authorities. Belizaire now faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. The children were found safe and later placed in foster care.
The case reportedly came to light after the father of the 2-month-old baby saw information on Belizaire’s WhatsApp status indicating that she had purchased a cruise ticket.
According to the arrest report cited by NBC6, Belizaire had told him that she planned to leave the children with their great-grandmother before departing.
Four children found inside the apartment
On Saturday evening, the baby’s father went to Belizaire’s North Miami Beach apartment. He reportedly noticed that the television was on and heard the children inside. Concerned, he called 911.
North Miami Beach police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and entered the residence.
Authorities said they found all four children inside without an adult present. The children, including the 2-month-old infant and a 2-year-old, had reportedly gathered in the bathroom.
Investigators later contacted the children’s great-grandmother. According to the arrest report, she confirmed that Belizaire had told her she intended to bring the children to her because she was going out of town, but the children were never dropped off.
Belizaire’s brother also reportedly told investigators that his sister had sent him a message Saturday evening asking him to check on the children.
Arrested after returning to Miami
Investigators determined that Belizaire had purchased a ticket for a three-day Bahamas cruise aboard the Carnival Conquest.
When she returned to PortMiami on Monday, authorities were waiting for her.
She was initially detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers before being turned over to North Miami Beach police. NBC6 reported that Belizaire invoked her right to remain silent and did not provide a statement to investigators.
During a court appearance Tuesday, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer set her total bond at $10,000 and ordered that she have no contact with the children while the case proceeds, according to Local 10.
A troubling case for the North Miami Beach community
The allegations are particularly concerning in North Miami Beach, a diverse city with a significant Haitian and Caribbean presence, where cases involving local families often resonate throughout the broader community.
Beyond the circumstances surrounding Belizaire’s arrest, the case raises serious questions about child safety and the responsibility of adults entrusted with the care of young children.
At the same time, Belizaire has been charged, not convicted. The allegations contained in the arrest report will have to be tested through the judicial process.
For the community, the immediate concern remains the welfare of the four children — particularly the 2-month-old infant. Authorities said all four children were found safe.
The intervention of the baby’s father and emergency responders ultimately brought the children to safety. The case will now proceed through the Miami-Dade court system.
