Secretary Rubio Meets with Haitian Transitional Leader to Address Escalating Security Crisis

Date:

Kingston, Jamaica — March 26, 2025 (Le Floridien) –U .S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on Wednesday with Fritz Alphonse Jean, President of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), to discuss the deepening security crisis engulfing the country, particularly the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The bilateral meeting, held in Kingston, Jamaica, comes amid a surge in gang violence and humanitarian deterioration across Haiti. According to a statement released by U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Secretary Rubio acknowledged the grave security challenges in the Haitian capital and praised the courage of the Haitian National Police as well as international forces supporting the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission.

“Secretary Rubio noted the dire security situation in Port-au-Prince and commended the extraordinary bravery of the Haitian National Police, and all international personnel supporting the MSS mission, for their work to establish stability and security in the country,” the statement read.

Rubio also underscored the critical need for unity and coordination within Haiti’s transitional government to counter the growing power of criminal gangs that have, according to estimates, seized control of over 80% of the capital.

The meeting follows increasing concerns from regional and international observers over Haiti’s trajectory, particularly after the recent death of a second Kenyan officer serving under the MSS in the Artibonite region. The U.S. remains a key financial backer of the security mission and has reiterated its support for restoring order and democratic governance in the Caribbean nation.

While no specific commitments were announced, the high-level exchange marks a renewed push for regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement aimed at stabilizing Haiti and supporting its path toward recovery.
