Date:

By Nephtalie Hyacinthe

The documentary highlights the life and death of Arthur L. McDuffie. The documentary engages family members and friends of the victim, lead detectives, eye witnesses, historians and contemporary community activists.

When Liberty Burns also examines the context in which Miami developed during this country’s Jim Crow era and traces the dynamic of race relations in the City while managing increasingly diverse ethnic populations, growth and change.

The movie is produced by Haitian-Born Dudley Alexis. He is an independent filmmaker and visual artist. He is both a cultural anthropologist and historian who sees his world through unique multicultural eyes. His body of work includes a vast number of short films documentaries including stories about the First Nation Miccosukee Tribe and Liberty in a Soup.

When Liberty Burns is co-produced by Miami Native Femi Folami-Browne. Her aspirations of producing films went into hibernation when she married a young pilot and moved to Lagos, Nigeria where instead, she travelled the world and became mother to three daughters. Browne seems to have found the perfect collaboration with filmmaker, Dudley Alexis and is ‘rewiring instead of retiring ‘ fully equipped at this stage of her life to make her earlier dreams of producing relevant films come to fruition. Folami-Browne received an Associates Degree in Radio, Television Technology and her undergraduate degree in Communications.

When Liberty Burns will premiere at the Miami Film Festival on March 7th, 2020 at 3 p.m. at Silverspot Cinema.
