U.S. Government Suspends Organized Departures from Haiti

Date:

(Le Floridien) — The U.S. Embassy in Haiti remains operational and continues to offer emergency services. However, the government is not facilitating evacuation efforts for U.S. citizens and their families in Haiti at this time.

U.S. citizens in Haiti requiring emergency assistance should contact the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince by emailing acspap@state.gov. Additionally, those wishing to leave Haiti with support from the U.S. government are encouraged to fill out the online intake form. The U.S. Department will inform applicants via email about the availability of departure options in the forthcoming weeks.

Airports in Cap-Haitien and Les Cayes are currently operational, offering limited commercial flights. The security situation in Haiti is volatile and poses significant risks. Travel within the country should only be undertaken at the discretion of U.S. citizens. The U.S. government cannot guarantee the safety of citizens traveling to airports, across borders, or during any subsequent journeys. It is crucial for U.S. citizens to carefully evaluate their personal security situation before deciding to travel within or leave Haiti. Travel or departure should only be considered if it is deemed safe by the citizens themselves.

The Dominican Republic has affirmed that U.S. citizens can enter through a land border crossing with a valid U.S. passport. U.S. citizens should assess their safety and security before deciding to travel by road within Haiti.

The press release also states that the U.S. government cannot facilitate the crossing of the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The authority to grant or deny entry lies solely with the immigration officials of the Dominican Republic. U.S. citizens who enter the Dominican Republic through unofficial border crossings risk facing severe immigration penalties when attempting to depart.
