Pras Michel, a founding member of the acclaimed hip-hop group Fugees, has surrendered to authorities to begin serving a 14-year federal prison sentence following his 2023 conviction on multiple criminal charges.

Michel reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona, on April 30 after receiving brief delays from the court earlier this year. He was convicted of offenses including money laundering, illegal lobbying, and campaign finance violations stemming from a complex international case.

According to federal prosecutors, Michel was involved in незаконные financial activities tied to foreign funds and political influence efforts in the United States. The case included allegations that he made illegal contributions to the 2012 reelection campaign of Barack Obama and later participated in lobbying efforts connected to the administration of Donald Trump. Authorities also linked the case to Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, who has been accused of orchestrating a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme.

Michel has denied wrongdoing and is expected to appeal his conviction. His spokesperson said he is complying with the legal process while continuing to challenge the charges in court, particularly those related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Before reporting to prison, Michel reportedly spent time with family and kept a low public profile. He also made a recent appearance at a Los Angeles concert hosted by Kanye West, where he was seen among other high-profile figures.

Michel rose to international fame in the 1990s as part of the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group became one of the most influential acts in hip-hop history, known for blending rap with soul and Caribbean influences.

His legal team maintains that the case is complex and that key aspects of the trial will be contested on appeal. Meanwhile, Michel will serve his sentence while those legal proceedings continue.
