Congresswoman Frederica Wilson Demands Oversight of Krome Detention Center Amid Reports of Inhumane Conditions

Date:

Miami, FL (Le Floridien) — Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) has formally requested a congressional visit and oversight of the Krome North Service Processing Center in Miami-Dade County, following alarming reports of mistreatment and deteriorating conditions at the facility.

In a letter dated April 7 to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Rep. Wilson cited firsthand accounts from immigration attorneys detailing severe issues at Krome, including detainees sleeping on concrete floors, inadequate food provisions, and female detainees being housed in a facility designated for men. She emphasized the urgency of exercising her constitutional duty for congressional oversight to ensure compliance with federal laws and the humane treatment of individuals in custody.

“It is imperative that Congress gains firsthand insight into the facility’s operations to address these serious concerns and ensure that the rights and dignity of individuals in detention are upheld,” Wilson stated in her letter.

This initiative comes in the wake of recent protests outside the Krome facility, where demonstrators decried the “inhumane” conditions reported by detainees. Notably, the Krome Detention Center has a significant population of Haitian detainees, reflecting the substantial Haitian-American community within Wilson’s congressional district.

Rep. Wilson has proposed dates between April 11 and 21 or April 25 and 28 for the visit and has requested assurances from DHS to facilitate complete transparency during the inspection.

The Congresswoman’s call for oversight underscores ongoing concerns about the treatment of immigrants in detention facilities and the need for accountability to uphold human rights standards.
