Florida Coalition Denounces Trump’s Immigration Policies as ‘Cruel and Inhumane,’ Citing Threats to TPS and Humanitarian Protections

By Le Floridien_________________

For many immigrants who saw the United States as a land of hope and new beginnings, the return of Donald Trump to the White House has brought back a familiar cloud of fear and uncertainty. Across Florida and the nation, immigrant communities are grappling with harsh new realities after the Trump administration swiftly moved to dismantle key protections that had allowed hundreds of thousands to live, work, and build their futures in the U.S.

A statewide coalition of organizations in Florida has publicly condemned these actions, describing them as “cruel and inhumane” and a betrayal of America’s tradition of human rights and dignity. At the center of their concerns are the suspension of humanitarian parole programs, the revocation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for several countries, and the fast-tracking of deportations through expedited removal without due process.

According to a press release received by Le Floridien, these measures target vulnerable populations and threaten to upend the lives of thousands of immigrants who have long contributed to American communities and economies.

Communities Under Threat

Programs like TPS and humanitarian parole have long served as lifelines for individuals fleeing violence, disasters, and political upheaval in nations such as Haiti, Venezuela, and El Salvador. These individuals underwent thorough background checks, secured financial sponsors, and followed strict government guidelines to remain legally in the U.S.

Now, with those protections revoked, hundreds of thousands are left in fear of deportation to unstable and dangerous environments. For many, the anxiety is overwhelming. Haitian immigrants, in particular, face grave risks as their homeland continues to spiral into political chaos, widespread violence, and humanitarian crisis. Some in the community have even expressed extreme fears, saying they would rather harm themselves than face forced return to such perilous conditions.

End of Humanitarian Parole Adds to the Crisis

The humanitarian parole program, expanded by the Biden administration in 2023, allowed individuals in life-threatening situations to enter the U.S. temporarily through a strict, vetted process. Under Trump’s new policies, this avenue has been closed, leaving many more in limbo with no legal path forward.

Advocates warn these changes strip away basic protections and push vulnerable people further into the shadows, forcing families to live with the constant threat of separation and deportation.

A Unified Voice Demanding Change

The Florida coalition calling for action includes a broad spectrum of organizations, from labor unions to student associations, faith-based groups, and nonprofits. Together, they are urging the administration to reinstate protections like TPS and to recognize the ongoing humanitarian crises in nations such as Haiti, Venezuela, Sudan, El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Afghanistan.

The organizations standing united include: Miramar Haitian-American Residents and Business Owners (MHARBO) – BridgeVision Fellowship (BVF) – Central Florida Haitian Coalition, Inc. -Haitian American Art Network, Inc. – Las Semillas, Inc. -Community Catalyst Connect – Centre de Support aux Personnes Handicapées (CESPHA) – National Haitian Student Association, Inc. – Center for Education, Health, Immigration and Assistance, INC (CEHIA) – 1199SEIU – Association of Exchange and Development of Activities and Partnership (AEDAP) – Homestead Haitian Pastors Association Inc. – Florida Immigrant Coalition.

These groups emphasize that stripping protections without offering meaningful immigration reform will only create more instability and suffering—not only for immigrants but for the broader American communities they contribute to through work, culture, and family ties.

They call on lawmakers to engage in serious dialogue about fixing America’s broken immigration system and addressing the root causes of migration, including U.S. foreign policies that contribute to displacement and instability abroad.

A Fight for America’s Humanity

Beyond legal protections, this fight is about reaffirming America’s role as a nation of compassion and opportunity. For decades, programs like TPS and humanitarian parole reflected the country’s commitment to those fleeing unimaginable hardship. Under the current climate, immigrants are again left questioning whether that compassion still exists.

“This is not just about immigration policy—it’s about human dignity,” said one community leader involved with the coalition. “People are simply trying to survive, provide for their families, and contribute to this country. They deserve protection, not persecution.”

The coalition remains firm in its commitment to advocating for a fair, inclusive, and just society where all people, regardless of their country of origin, are given the opportunity to thrive.  Photo credit abc3340.com
