PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (Le Floridien) — A tragic road accident occurred on Sunday evening, August 31, 2025, in Pèlerin 9, near the Pétion-Ville police station, leaving at least two people dead and several others injured, including eight Kenyan police officers deployed as part of the U.N.-backed Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).
According to witness reports, the collision was extremely violent, sparking panic among residents in the area. Photos and videos circulating on social media described the scene as a “terrible accident” due to the severity of the crash and the high number of victims.
In a statement released hours after the incident, Jack Ombaka, spokesman for the MSS, confirmed that the accident involved two MaxxPro armored vehicles belonging to the Haitian National Police (PNH) and operating under the MSS banner. The crash occurred along the Kenscoff-Pétion-Ville route, on the outskirts of the capital. Ombaka explained that one armored vehicle towing a disabled one broke down, causing the towed vehicle to collide with a wall and overturn.
Authorities confirmed that one of the fatalities was a civilian, while the other was a member of the MSS mission. Among the eight injured Kenyan officers, three were reported in critical condition and were airlifted to the neighboring Dominican Republic for advanced medical care. Others were transported to Aspen Level 2 Hospital at LSA1 for emergency treatment.
The MSS expressed its gratitude to local residents who immediately assisted rescue teams in providing first aid and evacuating victims from the crash site. Ombaka emphasized that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
This tragedy highlights the significant risks faced by Kenyan police officers and other international personnel deployed in Haiti under the U.N.-backed mission, which works alongside the PNH to combat widespread gang violence and restore stability.
Sunday’s accident brings the total number of Kenyan officers killed in Haiti to three since the mission began more than a year ago. One officer was previously killed in a gang attack, and another remains missing and is presumed dead.
As Haiti continues to grapple with escalating violence and a fragile security situation, the scale and severity of this accident have fueled growing concerns and heightened tensions in Pétion-Ville and beyond.
