PORT-AU-PRINCE — René Depestre, one of the most prominent figures in Haitian literature and poetry, celebrates his 102nd birthday Saturday, August 29, marking another milestone in an extraordinary literary life that has spanned more than eight decades.
Born in Jacmel on August 29, 1924, Depestre has become one of Haiti’s most internationally recognized literary voices, producing an extensive body of poetry, novels and essays that have reached audiences far beyond his native country.
Remarkably, despite his advanced age, Depestre remains intellectually active. According to Le Nouvelliste, people who have visited him recently say he continues to read and write poetry and retains an excellent memory. Although he now requires assistance to walk, he remains mentally engaged and connected to literature.
Depestre began writing at a young age and published his first collection of poetry, Étincelles, in 1945. His life and literary career would eventually take him far beyond Haiti, including periods in Europe, Latin America and Cuba before he settled permanently in France.
His writings have frequently explored Haiti, exile, identity, politics, Caribbean culture, love and the experience of displacement.
Among his best-known works is the novel Hadriana dans tous mes rêves, which received France’s prestigious Prix Renaudot in 1988, helping further establish Depestre as an important voice in French-language and Caribbean literature.
His longevity has also made him a living connection to an earlier generation of Haitian intellectuals and writers whose work helped introduce Haitian literature and culture to international audiences.
Earlier this month, Depestre was honored during the Banquet du Livre de Lagrasse in France, where writers and intellectuals gathered to celebrate his work ahead of his 102nd birthday.
More than a century after his birth in Jacmel, René Depestre remains one of the enduring names of Haitian literature. At 102 years old, he continues, according to those close to him, to read, remember and, perhaps most remarkably, to write poetry.
