A viral social media post circulating on Facebook has alarmed many immigrants by claiming that President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing the U.S. government to seize the bank accounts and money of all undocumented immigrants.
While the post is based on a real executive order and real statements made by President Trump, its conclusion is misleading. A review of the executive order, as well as reporting from major news organizations, shows that it does not authorize the blanket confiscation of bank accounts solely because a person is in the United States without legal immigration status.
What the Executive Order Actually Does
In May 2026, President Trump signed an executive order directing the Treasury Department and federal banking regulators to strengthen oversight of financial institutions and crack down on financial activity that allegedly facilitates illegal immigration or involves fraud against government programs.
The administration said the order is intended to prevent the use of the U.S. banking system to support criminal activity, human smuggling, money laundering, and the improper receipt of public benefits.
The executive order also instructs federal agencies to review banking practices and increase cooperation in identifying suspicious financial transactions.
Where the Confusion Comes From
The confusion appears to stem from a statement President Trump later posted on Truth Social, in which he wrote that bank accounts used to facilitate illegal immigration or store welfare benefits received unlawfully would be shut down and that the funds could ultimately face seizure and be returned to taxpayers.
That statement has been widely shared on social media, often without the legal context.
Some Facebook pages have simplified the message to claim that all undocumented immigrants will have their bank accounts seized, a claim that goes beyond what the executive order says.
Can the Government Simply Seize Someone’s Bank Account?
No.
Under current U.S. law, the federal government generally cannot confiscate a person’s bank account simply because that person lacks legal immigration status.
Authorities must rely on existing laws governing civil or criminal asset forfeiture, which typically require evidence that funds are connected to criminal activity such as fraud, money laundering, human trafficking, or other offenses. Financial institutions must also follow established legal procedures before accounts can be frozen or funds seized.
In other words, immigration status alone does not automatically authorize the government to take someone’s money.
Could Some Accounts Be Investigated?
Yes.
The executive order could lead to increased scrutiny of accounts suspected of being connected to unlawful activities, including immigration-related crimes or fraudulent receipt of government benefits.
If investigators believe an account is being used for illegal purposes, existing federal laws may allow authorities to seek a freeze or seizure of those assets through established legal procedures.
That is very different from a blanket policy targeting every undocumented immigrant with a bank account.
The Bottom Line
The viral Facebook claim exaggerates what the executive order actually does.
President Trump did sign an executive order aimed at tightening financial oversight related to illegal immigration and financial crimes. However, the order does not authorize the automatic seizure of all bank accounts belonging to undocumented immigrants.
As with many viral social media claims, the truth lies in the details. Readers should rely on official government documents and reporting from credible news organizations before sharing claims that may create unnecessary fear or confusion.
Verdict: MISLEADING. The executive order increases financial oversight and enforcement in certain situations but does not authorize the blanket seizure of undocumented immigrants’ bank accounts based solely on their immigration status.
