CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (Le Floridien) — Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Métayer Bowen, a Haitian-American community leader, was found dead in what authorities initially described as a suspected domestic violence incident, sending shockwaves across South Florida.
Wednesday afternoon, Coral Springs police confirmed that they were “conducting a death investigation involving” Vice Mayor Metayer Bowen. Describing the case as an “active investigation,” authorities did not provide additional details at this time, but announced a press conference scheduled for 5:45 p.m. at City Hall.
Aerial footage from Sky 10 showed several police vehicles, including a mobile command center, as well as crime scene tape surrounding Metayer Bowen’s residence in the 800 block of Northwest 127th Avenue. Law enforcement had responded to calls reporting multiple gunshots.

Police have identified her husband, Stephen Bowen, as a suspect. He is now in custody after allegedly fleeing to Plantation, where he was apprehended at the Landmark Towers apartment complex.
Elected to the city commission in 2020, Nancy Metayer Bowen was described in her official city biography as the first Black and Haitian-American woman to serve as a Coral Springs commissioner. For many members of the diaspora, she represented far more than a local elected official: she embodied success, civic engagement, and the pride of a rising Haitian community.
Beyond the shock, this tragedy also brings renewed attention to an issue too often overlooked: domestic violence within the Haitian community. Too many women still suffer in silence, caught between fear, cultural pressure, and lack of support. This tragedy raises urgent questions: how many other cases remain invisible? How many voices remain unheard?
As the investigation continues, the loss of Nancy Metayer Bowen leaves a profound void and deep sorrow in Coral Springs and throughout South Florida’s Haitian diaspora.
