Cap-Haïtien, Haiti — Flights to Haiti will officially resume in May 2026 as the Dominican Republic reopens its airspace, allowing direct connections to Cap-Haïtien for the first time in more than two years. The agreement will restore flights between the two countries beginning May 1st and is designed to improve mobility, economic ties, and bilateral relations.

Flights to Cap-Haïtien Offer New Travel Option for Haitians Abroad

The decision marks a major turning point for Haiti travel, especially for the Haitian diaspora looking for safer and more accessible routes into the country. The agreement allows links between three Dominican airports and Cap-Haïtien International Airport, while Port-au-Prince remains heavily affected by insecurity.

For Haitians living in South Florida, New York, Canada, and elsewhere, the reopening creates a practical alternative route through the Dominican Republic to reach northern Haiti. That could make family visits easier, support remittances, stimulate small business activity, and boost transportation and hospitality services in Cap-Haïtien.

With violence still disrupting Haiti’s capital, Cap-Haïtien is increasingly emerging as the country’s main international gateway, giving northern Haiti a more central role in the country’s travel and economic future.

Haiti Reopens Partially While Security Crisis Continues

The resumption of flights also reflects a modest diplomatic thaw between Haiti and the Dominican Republic after long-running tensions tied to migration, border controls, trade, and broader instability. But the reopening does not change the reality that Haiti’s security crisis remains severe, particularly in Port-au-Prince, where armed groups continue to wield major influence.

For now, Cap-Haïtien stands at the center of Haiti’s connection to the outside world, offering a lifeline for travel and economic activity while the country continues to face major security challenges. The reopening also comes as a new international force to combat gang violence is beginning to take shape. Chadian personnel have already arrived in Haiti as part of the new U.N.-backed Gang Suppression Force, alongside Jack Christofides, the mission’s special representative.

At the same time, Major General Erdenebat Batsuuri, presented as the force’s commander, recently arrived in Port-au-Prince for meetings and an on-the-ground assessment. Together, those developments suggest that while Haiti remains deeply unstable, international efforts to strengthen security are entering a new phase at the same moment the country’s northern gateway is reopening to regional air travel.
